Since 2001, our nation has lost more than 5,500 U.S. servicemembers in
Iraq and Afghanistan, and spent $1 trillion in operational costs for the
wars combined. By many estimates, hundreds of thousands of civilians have
died as a result of U.S. military activities in these two countries. Yet
for many of us, these wars seem distant and their costs remote.

Eyes Wide Open-Virginia is a powerful exhibit designed to promote deep
reflection and dialog about the human and economic cost of war to the
Commonwealth.

It consists of two displays:
One memorializes the Virginia soldiers who have been killed in Iraq. The other memorializes Virginia soldiers who have died in Afghanistan. The two displays can be combined into a single exhibit, or shown separately.

The exhibit includes combat boots representing the soldiers from Virginia
who have died, shoes symbolizing Iraqi civilian casualties, and signs with additional information about the costs of the wars. This powerful and solemn exhibit is available to community groups across the state.

We invite you to consider hosting either or both displays in your
community this year.

We will make the display available to you and provide you with all
necessary information. You are welcome to display either one of the
exhibits or both, combined.

The exhibit includes the following:
* Combat boots for servicemen and women from Virginia who have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, each tagged with the individual’s name,
military rank, age, and hometown
* Seventy-five civilian shoes
* Two A-frames with signs explaining the human and economic costs
of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
* In addition, reading lists can be provided on request of the
names of soldiers and the names of civilians, should you wish to include a
reading ceremony as part of the exhibit.

Eyes Wide Open-Virginia has been shown in public parks, at church events
and conferences, and on college campuses across the state. Some host
groups have timed the display around a meaningful date during the
year—for example, Veterans’ Day. It may be set up indoors or outdoors, and
you can decide how long to hold the exhibit.

Host groups are responsible for picking up and returning the display to
Richmond, and for providing volunteers to set up and monitor the display.
There are no fees whatsoever.

For more information, go to http://www.afsc.org/eyes/.

Contact me with questions or to reserve the display this year.
