The Tidewater Peace Alliance (TPA) evolved in late 2005 after a loose coalition of progressive organizations collaborated on creating the first Light in Dark Festival of Peace, which was some three weeks of films and seminars, etc., dealing with themes of war and peace, justice, truth and social progress centered around the Naro Cinema in the Ghent section of Norfolk. Over time the TPA has become an umbrella organization for over 20 groups.
We have brought some incredible speakers and documentaries into Hampton Roads, speakers such as Amy Goodman of Democracy Now!, the folks from Camp Casey, David Swanson, Ramzy Baroud and Jeremy Scahill. We also helped launch the annual local celebration of the United Nations International Day of Peace every Sept 21st. Our most important event right now, though, is the annual Light in the Dark Festival.
